Does Sri Lanka needs a new Constitution?
A constitution is a set of rules and regulations that actuate people to adhere the law of the country. Also the Constitution of a country described as the greatest law of that country. All the citizens are bonded to live according to the Constitution.
When it comes to the types of Constitutions,we can see two main types. Those are Written Constitutions and Unwritten Constitutions. In England there is an unwritten Constitution that descending for a long period of time.Nothern Ireland,Israel,Canada and New Zealand are some other countries which haven't a documented constitution.
Sri Lanka, officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka has a written constitution. It has composed by the 8th Parliament of Sri Lanka. After it ratified on 31st August in 1978,the constitution executed on 7th September in the same year. Now it is a 39 years old constitution. The purpose was conveying this new constitution is to replace the Sri Lankan Constitution of 1972.
Due to the dearth of some new rules and regulations minority of citizens in the country are talking in respect of delivering a new Constitution. In spite of a rational constitution it is pointless to convey a new one.As a example,in United States of America, they have a 228 years old constitution. In present their population is over than 323 million.Whereas the population or other problems were high they still in position to work with their former constitution. They make amendments whenever necessary. It is only then that they could achieve the success.
To the best of my recollection I don't think that we should convey a new constitution. If the British could gain more democracy,in the absence of a Constitution, if the America doesn't look for a new one though they have millions of people, then why should we have a new one? We would rather work according to the law than practising for a new constitution. The only thing we have to do is be familiarise to rules and regulations that we have,in order to make our country a better place. What is use of getting new ones unless we cannot adhere to the one which we have.I think it's time to comeet things and follow suit the law. What we should do is making amendments whenever necessary. Then Sri Lanka doesn't need a new constitution.
